The magic of the Lac du Salagou<\/h2>\n

No one can remain insensitive to the natural beauty and the gigantic size of the place, even though it was imagined by man in 1969. The Salagou Lake<\/a>, dug out of the ruffes<\/strong>, a typical red earth of the region formed of pelites, forces admiration and attracts visitors from all over the world. It is no coincidence that the area of the H\u00e9rault hinterland is compared to Mars<\/strong>, whose soils are made up of similar iron oxide-rich sedimentary rocks.<\/p>\n

The Salagou<\/strong>, born of a small river tamed by a dam for farming purposes, is now the largest lake in the H\u00e9rault<\/strong>. The 750-hectare<\/strong> limpid expanse of water contrasts with its surroundings, which contain remains from four different geological eras. The Salagou Lake<\/strong> also captivates with its magical colours. The blue of the lake and the red of the hills are complemented by the black of the volcanic flows and formations such as the Neck de la Roque<\/strong>. This chimney, which is part of the Roques-Ari\u00e8ge dyke<\/strong>, is even enhanced by strata of yellow limestone, discordant rocks from the Mesozoic.
